Sunday Link Love

Hey Friends, Happy Sunday!

I felt like chatting with you this morning (started this morning, ended at night as usual) as I slowly pack up my summer life to head back home to work my summer job. This job is not really what I wanted, as it in no way helps me work towards my career goals, but I’m trying to stay positive about it. It’s money I suppose and money that I desperately need.

In other news..

I moved out of my old apartment and into my new one for the fall, which I have to pay for all summer despite not living there…ugh stupid renting.

With that, I had to say my goodbyes to Rita and Emily (my housemates) which was sad 😦 Mama is going to miss them and they better keep me in the loop on the daily!

…But My new housemates are great. It will be a good year I know it!

I graduated my undergrad (2nd one) with an 86 GPA…please see me and give me all the scholarship monnies…please. I know it’s not 90’s but something!

I hit my squat PR and then raised it by 5lbs, meaning that I lifted 1.85x my body weight. I have never one-rep maxed before at anything and the feeling is so strange and exciting at the same time. I was practically not feeling I could of properly yesterday due to how sore I was but all worth it friends

And yeah, so that is the gist of my life this week, so onto my post today. I decided to do a “Link Love” post to share some interesting articles/podcasts I have come across in the past two weeks or so. I hope you find some of them as interesting as I did.

Dietary Guidelines should reflect new understandings about adult protein needs (Layman 2009)

This talks about the new findings for protein and why the intake recommendations for adults are, well, wrong on many levels. Here’s the synopsis:

~Protein should not be % of calories, it should be off body weight. If you are of a given height but are loosing weight (ie. dropping calories) your protein shouldn’t drop just because your calories are.

~Protein is VITAL for your life. You know your body is made of protein yes?

~Most adults benefit from an intake greater than the recommended one (0.8g/kg/day)

It also talks about protein distribution and how we tend to eat more protein in our meals as the day goes on. This suggests that we eat very little at breakfast, which is not optimal as we have been fasting overnight, and that we eat large amounts at dinner.

Screen Shot 2017-04-30 at 7.40.26 AM

The blue highlighted portion is showing maximum muscle protein synthesis. We need at least 15g of protein to stimulate protein synthesis and take a peak at a typical breakfast…

Although they stated that this uneven distribution has not really been shown to negatively affect growth of children or adults, it may have large impacts on older adults. Here, protein intake is critical as they tend to be in a negative nitrogen balance (or state of protein breakdown) and need more than a typical adult to maintain neutral or positive balance.

Finally, take note that protein is more satiating. So when a meal is proportionally more balanced with protein (rather than mostly carbohydrates..like the typical American breakfast) you will be fuller longer. Alternatively, carbohydrate rich meals tend to not keep you as full longer. This doesn’t mean that carbs are bad, it simply runs the risk of individuals over eating their needs because they find themselves hungry more often.

So could protein be an aid in better weight management?

IceCream4PRs Podcast #30 – Gender Differences in Training feat. Menno HenselmansJeff Nippard

Really cool podcast diving into the differences between men and women for training and nutrition in addition to the genetic potential that women have for muscle development specifically.

Relative to their starting point (which is often different), females have been shown to have the same relative muscle growth and protein synthesis potential as men! So if you take a man and woman who weigh the same, you can find that they can grow the same proportion of muscle. Differences in fatty acid composition in the body was then stated as a potential reason as to why we don’t see very muscular women in addition to inefficient or non-optimal training for their body physiology and birth control. This is controversial however, but these are some of the recent findings.

This is not to create fears in women that they will ‘blow up’ like a man when they touch a weight, because as you can see from a subjective perspective, the number of women walking around with the same level of muscularity as a male is quite small. It was the thought that this was potentially more socio-cultural in the sense that many women don’t train to the same degree as males and/or if they do train, they don’t optimize their growth due to personal preferences or lack of knowledge. There is also some whispers that oral contraceptives decrease the rate of muscle growth.

Why Has the American Approach to Heart Disease Failed?– Chris Kresser

This is an interesting take on heart disease and challenges the notion that heart disease is due to the clogging of our arteries, specifically from saturated fats. What is interesting is that many just follow along with the idea that arteries get clogged and that this is the main driving factor of heart disease when thats not actually the full story. Yes, ‘clogging’ does happen, per say, but that is only after the walls of the vessels are narrowed due to plaque buildup (atherosclerosis). This build-up is an inflammatory response that, which he stated, is most often the result of metabolic syndrome and/or insulin resistance.

Its funny, but those syndromes are often helped with higher fat and lower carb dietary interventions…

Higher fats you say to help heart disease…Hmmm…

Anxiety: Are Nutritional Deficiencies A Common Cause – Mark Sisson

An interesting article as it brings up a topic that is close to my own heart, anxiety. Although I would have to do my own research (as I feel sometimes that Mark may be a bit bias sometimes) and I just like to back up my words with my own readings, the idea of incorporating foods that perhaps have anxiety reducing effect is something I think many people could benefit from..

if, of course, they actually do something…

Gut Bacteria Tell The Brain What Animals Should Eat

This article was based off of a brand spankin new journal article by Leitao- Goncalves et al (April 2017) that looked at the common fruit fly and how there appeared to be an association between their gut flora and eating the right foods to provide them with all of their essential amino acids. Although there are a few flaws with this study that limit it’s generalizability to humans (hello we aren’t flies, and we have more bacteria in our guts then them), it sparks an interesting idea to look into. Can your gut bacteria trigger cravings for certain foods that optimize your health?

I feel that this is entirely possible because we have found that those who are obese tend to have different gut bacteria communities than those who are leaner and that those specific communities lend themselves to negative health outcomes.

Stay Single Until You Meet A Guy Like This…

Corny? Maybe. But it pulled at my romantic heart strings a bit. Best line?

Stay single until you meet the guy who never stops trying to keep you…Because he knows getting you wasn’t the hard part but constantly giving you a reason to stay is what you deserve.

Oh and of course a solid finisher…

The one who changes the standard you once had and suddenly no one can compare.

#Mush.

And finally to end off this post..

Screen Shot 2017-04-30 at 9.37.06 PM

This is a tweet from Sohee Lee’s Twitter (you should check her out, she works alongside Layne Norton and Brett Contreras and is a lady of science!).

Its a good solid reminder because I think everyone knows this to be true but always believe they have found an exception somehow.

Hope you had a fabulous Sunday Friends

Flaunt Yo Fine Self

I want to throw myself into more situations.

I want to ask out that guy I have eyein’ for the past month.

I want to shake the hand of that person I look up to.

I want to be able to say what I want without a second thought.

…I want to be more confident…

But why am I not?

45b6e25f6312d9f7ae8f52d25a90cce4.jpg

Confidence is something you grow into. Something to gather over time. You don’t just become confident, you have to wrestle through the trees of the forest that is yourself to find it.

8065467654_ef87b5cca9_c.jpg

My Friends, I have mentioned this a few times in more recent posts but I thought it was important enough to chatter about in its own space.

You can never pinpoint where confidence originates from. That being said, I can without a doubt say that I know when it started to build…

My childhood was a lot of useless effort trying to please others. I was self conscious and worried about what others thought. I guess everyone goes through that, but my sensitivity and perfectionism really didn’t help the issue.

Fast forward a bit to during my ED which was where I broke. I hit that bottom. It had me in a strangle hold that I didn’t really understand at that time. I was weak, tired and I had lost my spirit.

Throughout my journey back up, I didn’t really perceive my inner strength yet. I started my recovery because I wanted my parents to not be sad or scared rather then for myself because I didn’t see anything wrong with me at the time. I was too far gone at that point. It wasn’t until much later that I could really appreciate the huge climb I had done.

I gained such and such pounds while my head was screaming at me to fight back

I cried, I yelled and I resisted when I could. <- As bad as that sounds, it’s something that is required for recovery in my opinion. If you don’t let those demons out, you are not helping yourself because you are not bringing them to the surface to then be challenged.

I faced the walls of my high school weight restored while everyone whispered behind my back because they “knew..” Kids can be so cruel.

I finished that year (grade 11) with honours despite missing half the semester.

I did a lot in the time, but I was still fighting myself at that time. Yes, I was weight restored, but my mind was far from it.

Prom came and went. I will say that I was happier that year and I did enjoy my prom with my friends. No, I didn’t get asked to prom, but I didn’t really expect to anyways…

4313_182294575572_3747711_n.jpg

University started and I saw that first light of confidence when I stepped foot into the Pulse (the McMaster gym) for the first time. Where many girls would shy away from the testosterone filled weight section, I walked right into the middle of it without a second thought and quickly established myself as a permanent resident in a place where few girls wandered.

“Pink Towel Girl” was born.

15767_10154524175130072_502097592251242738_n.jpg

One month in, I met my Ex. This relationship sparked a lot of change in me. Probably more then he will ever know. He gave me so much without even thinking about it. As sad as it sounds, a huge part of this change came from the simple fact that he loved me.

Although it wasn’t something I really thought about, I truly believe that I didn’t feel as if I was worthy or that I could be loved by another person aside from my parents. I went through high school feeling unwanted I suppose because I didn’t really get asked out.

I look back now and know that this could have been for a number of reasons (high school is clique-ie and so dating only happens between certain people, I also probably gave off a ‘not interested vibe’ because, really, I wasn’t, and lastly, I have always been a bit more mature even at that age and lets be real, high school boys are not the most mature for the most part… no offence to my male readers).

But back at that time, feeling loved by someone else made me feel worthy. Made me feel like more of a person and that maybe, just maybe someone else would want to spend their time with me and like me for me.

417697_10151351447480072_292291260_n.jpg

Five years of that relationship and five years of being out of my parents house and exploring my surroundings and myself led to me really becoming more of ‘me.’

That confidence was blossoming.

Unfortunately, which I say because it’s sad to say, I think the end of my relationship after that 5 years also led to a huge period of growth because I came to understand what I need and what I truly want.

I took the year (first year at Guelph University, or last year) to really accept my new state of singleness and to be ‘selfish’ per say with doing really anything I wanted without a care. This time is really what finalized who I am today.

I now don’t really care what other people think. Hip thrusters in the gym, weird looks maybe, but they are great for the booty. Leaving the house make-up less is a normal thing now, my lashes don’t see mascara unless theres a pretty eventful thing happenin ..

I have accepted who I am FINALLY. I am me. I have my quirks. I have my things I need to work on and I have the discovered the qualities I love.

I have a passion, one that includes helping others, and others have told me that they hear and feel that passion when I talk to them.

I never feel afraid to state my opinion because why should I be? If someone doesn’t agree with me, that’s fine. Why would I worry about not having the same mindframe as them anyways? I’m not them, I’m me.

And lastly,

I’m not afraid to get what I WANT. I don’t settle because I’m worth more then that. I’m not afraid to say no if that’s not something I want and if I want something, I go get it because I’m capable and I’m worthy of that thing.

This includes having the confidence to go up to whom ever I want as well. I asked out someone for the first time in my life a week ago and things went and are still going quite well. I wasn’t nervous at all to do so and I wasn’t anxious during our time together either. Yes, it hasn’t been that long and who knows what will happen, but the point is that if you took my 18 year old self and put her in this situation, I would have fallen off my rocker already if I had even made it to the date in the first place.

I’m more confident then I have ever been in my life and it’s about damn time. Your 20’s are a time to have fun as your young self and explore you and others. Embrace YOU and love YOU because you deserve to.

Flaunt yo fine self!

946971_10151566892301066_2139084188_n.jpg

As I mentioned, confidence is something you gain, not something you have. You have to go through scary, anxiety provoking and sometimes hard times to bring out that confidence.

So take the time and put yourself in uncomfortable situations because if you don’t or let your fears run your life, that part of the puzzle may never come to find its place and you loose that possibility to grow.

Well that was a long Sunday ramble. I hope you enjoyed it and let me know some of your thoughts in the comments.

Did you have a lot of confidence throughout your life?

What is one situation that you think made you a much stronger person?

Spill It, Sundays #5

Hey Friends,

Happy Sunday!!

I’m uber excited about today because I got my normal Sunday open shift covered to venture down to TO for the Toronto ProSuperShow Expo!

Home

How exciting is that?!?

If you are unsure about what this event is, check out their website here. It’s basically a bodybuilding expo filled with sponsors of big supplement companies, representatives (possibly lookin for new recruits for their teams) and a bunch of powerlifting/strongman/fitness/etc shows. So as a whole is pretty much any gymrats fantasy for a few reasons

  • If you are looking to hop on stage anytime soon here’s your chance to either see what its like and how judging is done OR jump on up to their stage and get some feedback
  • Networking. If you are looking for supplement representation than this is the perfect spot for you to do it as there are at least 50 different big name companies with booths set up.
  • Enjoy the competitions. I know there are some fitness model competitions set up along with more active ones like strongman, power lifting and even a boxing match I believe.
  • Chat with other fitness buffs and bodybuilders + possibly run into a few famous fitness models and go snap happy

And finally, and probably the most important thing is…

FREE SWAG!

I have always wanted to go to one of these expos but I always end up missing them. This year though, I was determined to attend even if I only heard it was in town a mere two days ago. The scramble to get work covered will be well worth it I’m sure!

Free protein anyone?

Weeeoooo! Details will come in a later post I promise. 😀

Now onto regular scheduling. What up Arman?

The big man's world

This weeks set of questions for Spill It, Sundays is brought to us all by Miss Spoons over at Running with Spoons. Thanks Amanda!

Let us begin. Oh and don’t forget to check out The Big Man’s World for all of the other blogger’s entry’s on this fine Sunday.

1. If you had to move to another country, where would you move and why?

Paradise.

Oh that would be a place like Turks and Caicos if you’re wondering. Love me some hot, sunny, beautiful beach livin!

Okay okay so that would be a real fantasy I suppose. To be more realistic about where I would wanna park myself for many a years, I would say Cali. Still get my beaches, my sunshine and my heat BUT it also allows for me to…ya know, get a job perhaps. Ooooh RD or RD/personal trainer to the stars? Am I dreamin there? 😛

2. Would you rather live in the country or in the city?

City….I think…

I grew up in da burbs and once you are past the age of ten, things can get pretty dull. I can only imagine it being worse when stationed out in the middle of no where. No offense to those who love it out there, but for me, the person who always needs to be doing something and movin and groovin, I would feel trapped.

On the other hand seeing this every day…

Robots…would not be my ideal either. Hello Bay Street in Toronto where there is a permanent cold snap with a hint of lackluster emotion and “I don’t give a crap about you” attitude. Exaggeration? Only slightly. Oh the suites financial district.

So I need some middle ground. I like having lots of things to do, which is what you get in the city BUT I also need people to be a lil bit more relaxed, friendly and happy, which is more so seen in the burbs and the country.

So I’m stumped.

3. If you could try out any job for a week, what would you like to try?

Call me boring but I would love to see my dream job in action. A Registered Dietician at work.

As for where I want to set myself up, I’m not 100% sure yet BUT I have thought about either exercise and bodybuilding OR eating disorders. Two very extreme areas of work but both very interesting to work with.

4. What are the first 5 things you do when you wake up in the morning?

Clothes on.

Make oatmeal.

Find a show to entertain myself with while nommin.

Devour oatmeal.

Facebookin before gymin.

Breakfast. The most important part of the morning, yes?

Typical morning of a gymrat no?

5. Tell me your deepest, darkest secret. Or at least something that most people don’t know about you.

Pshhh just one? I gots 10. Check’em out here.

6. If someone asked you to give them a random piece of advice, what would you say?

Stop caring so much about what others have to say or think about what you do. I really wish that this advice would have sunken into my hard head when I was in my teens because I look back and find it sad how NOT confident I truly was. You will never ever be happy if you worry too much others. You are not living their life or their dreams. Find your love and run with it.

yeayea7

7. What are some of your favourite books?

…What’s a book?

…but actually, I don’t really read. You’re ashamed of me now aren’t you? If I do read, its blogs or articles online that generally have to do with health and fitness related stuff. Yes, I’m that predictable.

A book that does actually stick out in the my mind as being a favourite of my younger self was called Animal Heroes and I read and thoroughly enjoyed every page. Amazing stories about animals that had risked their own lives to save their best friends: Their owners. What’s not to love? All my fellow animal lovers would understand me…

Childhood favourites included Thomas’s Snowsuite and any other of Robert Munsch’s books. That man=genius. My mind is brain-farting right now and I can’t think of any others.

8. If you were going to write a book, what would it be about?

How to be strong, for shorties. 😀

9. Name three things hanging out in your fridge door.

  • Fish oils. Necessity! Hint hint, nudge nudge, everyone should be supplementing with these guys, just sayin.
  • Egg whites. Proatmeal necessity.
  • Unsweetened Almond Milk. Same as above.

I’m sure you expected peanut butter to be in that list didn’t you?

Well my peanut butter jar is so big that it don’t fit in that lil fridge door shelf…

..so there.

10. What do you want to be remembered for?

Helping to inspire others. That is the most uplifting and fulfilling feeling anyone could ever want.

inspire

So I can’t hold in my excitement anymore. I anxiously await Chaunda’s pickup and to whisk us off to the Expo and I will chatter at you all lata times 😀

Enjoy your Sunday!

Spill It, Sundays #4

Happy Sunday Friends!

I want to first start this post by thanking you all so much for all the love over my last post (my vlog). It really meant a lot as I was kind of nervous to post it as I’m, as I said, not the most camera happy person. I promise to be a bit more organized with my thoughts the next time around as I felt I was super scattered and “trail-offy.”  It’s all a learning process I suppose. I also appreciate the feedback and all of your fabulous questions!! So many to answer in the next video. 😀 Hugs!!

I do want to make mention that my non tech savy self fixed the whole cutting off at minute 11 thing. The full video is now posted and the link in the last post has been updated to the full 31 minute version 🙂 Thanks to all of you that let me know that it was incomplete!

Now onto this post’s topic…

I had the nicest lil cardinal singing to me when I began this post…I say began as these posts are always started first thing in the AM and then completed following my day at work. Some peeps just don’t get your typical lazy Sunday.

What do your Sundays look like?

Anywho lets jump right into the topic of today’s post which is…

Lettin it all hang out with Arman over at The Big Mans World.

Did that sound wrong…or gross? Get your mind out of the gutter, I meant our answers geesh.

The big man's world

This weeks edition is brought to us all by Jen over at Chase the Red Grape so send her some love by checkin out her blog too!

1) I am coming to visit! Where would you take me and what would we do?

To be honest…I would prolly take ya to the gym or the farmer’s market because those are my favourite places 😛 Oppps. But for real, if we could try something new and exciting together there is this circus school (Zacada Circus School) in Hamilton that I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to go and try out. You basically pay like 20 bucks or something cheap for and hour and a half of circus ring hoppin, silk rope sliddin and back bendin. Exercise made super fun is a great trip to me!

gallery1Weeeooo!! So much fun! Check out their website

Oh and then I would take you to Chucks because you can’t come visit me without tryin out a dirty burger 😉 Preferably, a dirty exotic meat burger.

Gotta end the trip on a “you gotta eat here” food note right?

2) What is the one thing you never leave the supermarket without buying?

Okay okay I’m going to be uber boring with this one but my top five “oh I will need this in a day or two so I mind as well pick more up” buys would be…

  1. Kabocha
  2. Mushrooms
  3. Swiss Chard
  4. Fish
  5. Acorn Squash

Calling squash addicts anonymous now.

I will say that I rarely leave without some form of seafood in my hand. Blasted fish counter and those lovely gems of the sea just get me every time.

3)When I say burpees, you say…

Agreed?

4) What is the first website you check in the day?

A show of some kind while nommin on breaky because food always comes first 😀

Amirite or amirite-rrr?

5) Tell me about one act of kindness you have done recently?

It had been a while since raisins and oatmeal had married and produced one of in my personal spotters favourite goodies so on Saturday I brought the Deanster in some homemade skillet cookies in his favourite flavour

Oatmeal Raisin.

20140525-204428.jpgThese cookies are not winning any prizes in the appearance department that’s for sure BUT they are quite good and very easy to make. Want a soft and warm cookie with a slightly crispy outside in five minutes? Try out skillet cookies! I got this idea years ago from the genius herself, Dana over at the Minimalist Baker. After seeing her recipe, I created my own version to use as a pre-workout snack that I could cart around with me in class before heading to the gym. Her oatmeal cookie pancakes took on the form of my “skillet cookies” as I made my batter quite a bit thicker, thus creating a much chewier and ‘oatier’ product than your average pancake. Much more like a cookie I would say. Her recipe is here, and I should really get around to posting my own version as they are really good actually eatin either as a stack of ‘cakes or cookies.

Please note that I’m still thinking I found an actual ‘skillet cookie’ recipe but I’m failing at remembering the amazing blog that posted them despite literally seeing the blog page in my mind.

Continuing on my baking spree of kindness, this blueberry paleo loaf made it into the hands of my Dad for snackage over the week at work…

20140525-204421.jpgAs I had never worked with JUST almond flour before, I wanted to use a recipe as guidance for my first attempt to wrap my mind around the tricks. Thanks to Kristen at Live Simply for this amazing recipe. I made a few tweaks as I always do (subbed 1 tbsp of pure maple syrup and a few Stevia packets for all of the honey, used apple sauce and bloobs rather than banana and used 2 eggs+1 flax egg) and my Dad very much enjoyed it!

6) You have a carton of eggs, what would you make with them?

Hmmm…toughie as I don’t really cook with eggs too much. This is totally sad because I really do enjoy them! So let me find a tasty recipe to use’em all up.

Oh Oh I got a good one!

I would have a burger party and everyone could rock perfectly poached eggs on their [bunless bison] burgers.

I have always wanted to try that!

Oh wait!

Actually I have a better idea! Since we are on the topic of acts of kindness

If it was around Easter, I would bring those eggs over to the McMaster Children’s Hospital (where I used to volunteer in the ER) and we could paint some easter eggs. That would be so much fun and hopefully bring some happiness to those kids waiting for hours in the ER.

7) Tell me about a sight you have seen that took your breath away.

Coming home yesterday evening from the Eaton Centre on the bus, we drove past Cootes Paradise as we came around the bend to the highway exit and it was just that perfect time of dusk where the clouds were that lovely shade of pinky-orange and cast a stunning glow over the water. It’s the simple things that are the most beautiful I think.

What I saw was not as breathtaking as this image, but you get the idea.

8) Your an elephant, what would you never forget?

Those who were sincerely kind to me.

I believe that you should always always always remember and cherish those people who stumble into your life and want only good things for you. Showing empathy, love, kindness and respect is not always a given these days and shouldn’t be taken lightly.

9) Reveal to me a ‘slang’ word or term that you use where you are from, and what it means!

Smorgasbord. Not really a a native slang term but rather a term that my Mom passed to me…and the only slang term I can think of at the moment. It basically means a combination of things. We often use it to describe food when there is a whole bunch of goodies combined into one great thing

My proatmeal for example 😉

…. Or for a more universal example…

…your average Christmas or Thanksgiving feasting plate.

10) Tell me a corny joke!

I saw this yesterday morning on Facebook and it made me smile and laugh despite it’s corny nature…

Thanks again to Jen and Arman for the hook up this week!

Last act of kindness you did for someone?

What’s your favourite way to use eggies?

Would you try out that circus school with me?

Spill It Sunday’s Trois

What’s up on your fine Sunday Friends?

This lil one had to work this afternoon so I got in a good sweat session this morning with some shoulders, delts and a touch of leggies and booty work. Today is typically my rest day BUT with tomorrow being a stat holiday (holler to Queen Victoria for that one) and all, my gym is closed (sadface) so I worked it in for today before work and plan on taking it easy (ie. sleepin!) tomorrow with everything being closed.

Any plans for your holiday Monday my fellow Canadian readers?

What else happens to fall on Sundays? Well it’s Spill It, Sundays with Arman over at The Big Mans World!

The big man's world

This week the blogger questions came from the lovely Sarah over at Slices of Sarah Pie. Thanks for the contribution Sarah! Puttin my memory muscle to work this week! 😀

1. What is your middle name? If you don’t have one do you wish you did? What would it be?

Grace and Iona. Yup I have not one, but two middle names. One from each side of the fam-jam. Grace is my Nana’s (Dad’s mom) name and Iona is my Great Grandmother’s name (Mom’s Grandma), whom I never met unfortunately. My Mom always says she would have been thrilled with me 😀

2. When you were little what did you want to be when you grew up?

I was never the kind to switch my career aspirations constantly…until I got to University. 😛 Up until having to do those volunteer hours in grade 9, I always wanted to be a Veterinarian.

I loved, and still love, all things fuzzy and I thought that a Vet would be the perfect career for me…

I was wrong.

It’s one thing to love animals. It’s a whole other ball park to treat them.

You see, I did my 40 hours of community service at my local Vet Hospital (Big thanks to Dr. Stephanie Ewing for the opportunity and reality check!) and pretty much almost broke down on the first day not once…oh no, but three times!

Unfortunate Event 1: Dog comes in for a simple spay. Dr. Ewing asks me if I would like to come in and watch a surgery. Amazing opportunity right?….Yeah I had to leave because I was about to pass out the second she started pullin stuff out. Why is the room getting black an spotty. Why is my tummy doing pancake flips…uh oh…

Unfortunate Event 2: Cute and very frail looking fur baby (probably about 5lbs of fur baby) comes in and is getting prepped to be put to sleep. Seriously!?!? On my first day! I had to turn around and try to think about rainbows and all things nice so I didn’t embarrass myself by ballin my eyes out. Empathy is a bad thing sometimes peeps. Stop thinkin about what the dog is thinkin! :’-(

Unfortunate Event 3. Having to come in a see this poor lil kitten (no more than a few months old) suffer and eventually pass away from tetanis. That’s a horrible, horrible condition to watch. I tried to remind myself that although the kitten was so young, it was now free of it’s pain

So yes, I love animals but NO I can not be an animal doc. I’m not strong enough for that.

3.  What do you keep in the glove box of your car?

Oh that bicycle looking car I have right? Well, it kinda lacks a glove box but it does sport a pretty awesome turtle bell on it’s pretty young handle bars. That counts right?

20140518-081223.jpgOh hey Franklin. Franklin may look sad in this picture but I assure you, he’s a happy go lucky speed demon if I ever saw one! 😉

4. Name one food that always seems to go bad before you eat it?

Bags of salad.

I wish…

It makes me really sad because there is one type that I really love (Dole’s Very Veggie blend with the snap peas and radishes) and I would totally use it all up if my stomach allowed for me to have more than 1 or 2 #saladbeasts a week. I LOVE salads. My IBS tummy on the other hand…not so much.

5. What was the last workout you did?

Shoulders/delts and some leg work (+core work of course) this morning before jumpin on off to work. Like I mentioned, I hopped into the gym on my typical rest day today because it’s closed tomorrow. I was a lil worried last night that I would be feelin a lil run down for my workout this morning, as it would be my fourth day on, but I felt good after hittin the hay a whole 30 minutes earlier. Tomorrows rest day will be much appreciated by my body I’m sure.

6. When was the last time you got the giggles in an inappropriate moment? What did you do?

I don’t know what it is about someone sneezing continuously but it makes me giggle so hard every time. I know it’s mean to laugh at someone else’s unfortunate and persistant nasal clearing, as really, they can’t control the fact that there’s some dust lingerin up there, but I’m sorry, I can’t help myself when they have sneezed a good 8 times in a row and continue to sneeze on. Anyone else?

This video of the kitten below is super cute and almost doesn’t seem real. Sneeze trooper!

7. If you had to pick one song to play continuously in the background of your everyday life what would you pick?

Screen shot 2014-05-18 at 11.36.53 AMCan’t Hold Us (Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, feat. Ray Dalton). I love this song! I feel like it’s very empowering.

Can we go back, this is the moment
Tonight is the night, we’ll fight ’til it’s over
So we put our hands up like the ceiling can’t hold us
Like the ceiling can’t hold us

Raise those hands, this is our party
We came here to live life like nobody was watching
I got my city right behind me
If I fall, they got me. Learn from that failure gain humility and then we keep marching ourselves

8. What would you do if you got 25 hours in a day while everyone else was still stuck with 24?

Hmmmm…I would ensure that I always did something for myself EVERY DAY! When we get busy we tend to forget that sometimes we just need some  down time to ourselves. We need to slow down and give at least an hour to chill out! Whether that be getting that extra hour of sleep. Perhaps that hour could be spent reading something new. Baking. More blogging! Oh the possibilities that an extra hour in every day could bring.

9. Pick a great picture of you/your family/your friends, tell us the background story of what’s happening in it.

I have mentioned before that I’m not really one to jump in front of a camera so my stash of pictures is, well, limited. Going back through more recent-ish photos, this one definitely stuck out for me and made me smile.

IMG_2274Meeting Maggie for the first time. That day I remember feeling like the biggest lil kid as I was so unbelievably excited to meet her that I couldn’t leave work fast enough. I gabbed on and on to all my co-workers that she was coming and the moment I saw her I literally snatched her out of my Mom’s sling (they used to put her in the sling you see in the picture to keep her tiny 2lb fluffy self warm) and melted into a pile of mush. Permanent smile on my face throughout that entire dinner (in addition to everyone eating around us). I always miss her while I’m here.

10. Whats your favorite quote/song/image when you need a little inspiration?

My favourite quotation is the one in my blog header

From Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, this quotation has always resonated with me. Ever since I stepped into the gym I have felt confidence and strength like I have never felt before. These qualities are not just left in the gym either, but have permeated into the other aspects of my life as well. No one will ever call me weak. Not ever.

Thanks again to Sarah for this weeks questionnaire post. Maybe I can dazzle Mr. Arman enough that I may be asked to come of with les questions one week. Hint hint, nudge nudge. 😉

Enjoy your Victoria Day my Canadian friends and for all those not celebrating in their PJ’s tomorrow with a stat holiday, sorry for your luck start your week off with a bang!

What did you want to be when you were younger?

Worst, most inappropriate thing you ever laughed at?

Whatcha doing tomorrow with everything closed up for the holiday?

Spill It Sundays Deux

Hey Friends!

Happy Sunday Funday to all of you not workin folks…unlike moi. Le sigh. How has your weekend been? Mine was relaxin as usual and got topped off nicely with a dinner and date night with my parents at Bangkok Spoon. You really can’t go wrong with Thai food in my opinion! 😉

20140504-203802.jpgI got the Volcano Seafood which is absolutely amazing! Mixed seafood (calamari, scallops…I only got one this time pft…mussels and shrimp), bamboo shoots, peppers and eggplant are delivered to the table in a spicy thai sauce and then thrown onto a sizzle plate to finish up the cooking process right before your eyes. Steam facial anyone?

Of course, three veggies is simply not enough variety for this girl, so I also get a lil bowl of mixed Asian veggies to toss into the pan to heat through and get all mixed into the sauce. You can’t never have too many veggies IMO…Amirite?

Another thing…apparently my spice tolerance is up up up because their “spicy” dish was accompanied by a requested bowl of chili flakes as I didn’t detect said ‘spicy’ in said sauce. Maybe they forgot? This girl needs her nose runnin a bit to be content with spice level.

Anyways, with it being Sunday and all, we are back to Sunday programming which is now Spill It Sundays with Arman over at The Big Mans World. Oh heeeyy Arman friend, thanks for the partay! 😀

The Big Man's World

There is a new twist on this fun lil link-up though….

Instead of Arman asking the questions based on a theme, we have other bloggers setting the pace for the blogger interviews. This week it featured questions by the lovely Juli over at  1000 lovely things!

So what did Juli want to know from all us bloggers this week?

1.  In real life are you an extrovert or more introvert person?

I would say that I’m much more of an introvert, especially when I was younger. Don’t get me wrong, I love being around people and I’m actually very sociable BUT I don’t like to be the center of attention. So I’m not one to do this…

tumblr_lmchbwYFFq1qa4vrao1_500I also do enjoy my time alone, which I suppose is where the introvert qualities come in. I’m perfectly content spending an evening in blogging, baking or doing whatever alone with a nice candle burning, sippin on some herbal tea and having music playing. That being said, I crave social situations and can feel a sense of loneliness if I’m cooped up by myself too long.

2. If money was no object, where would you move to?

CAL-to-the-I-FOR-N-AAAA!  Or some island like Turks and Caicos or the Bahamas. HEat and the beach is all I can say…and not just because Mother Nature kicked the crap out of us Canadian’s this winter.

3. What are your hobbies besides blogging, food and working out?

There’s more to life than those wonderful things? 😉

4. If you have a sibling what do you have in common and where do you differ the most? If you are an only child tell me about your pet/ mother/ father, best friend …

Well, to start, I’m an only child sooooo I will pick my Mom.

In common- Tastes in music/shows, we both like creating things (she’s the Van Gogh of all things arrangement, while I strive at plating for example), we are told we share the same gestures and facial expressions and I would like to say our giving and kind nature. A common flaw we share is that we can be taken advantage of because we try to appeal to others first and we keep anything negative or anxiety provoking inside rather than expressing it.

How we differ- My Mom has a wonderful presence in a room and the ability to talk with ANYONE and EVERYONE. She demands attention without thinking about it or trying to do it. She has that personality to draw people to her. I’m getting better at branching out and not being as shy as I once once (hello coming out of the corner of people I know and actually chatting with someone I have never met).

5. If you were able to spend one day as the opposite sex, what would you do?

I feel like I would spend the whole day trying to figure out how to walk properly (how do they walk with those things in the way? lol) and pee..

On a serious note though, I admire a man’s strength. It would be nice to push a guy’s body to it’s limits to see how that differs from how I can push my own. #ConfessionsOfAGymAddict

6. If you could have any super power what would it be

To heal. Is that selfish? I ask that because would I be messing with fate too much? Maybe I’m just thinking too much… Story of my life.

I’m extremely sensitive and can literally feel another person’s pain whether I know them or not. So, if anything, if I could take a physical pain that is causing someone to suffer away, I would be happy.

Anyone else obsessed with Charmed? Remember Leo? He was a whitelighter who could heal physical wounds. He could also teleport which would also be super cool.

Now you see me….Now you don’t. Bam I’m in Cali! 😀

7. When you’re upset, what are you doing to cheer yourself up?

Baking. It helps me to let my thoughts wander enough that I don’t think about whatever is upsetting more too much and is something that brings me comfort.

8. You have $500 to spend on anything you want – what would it be?

Can I say a puppy?

…and I just died a lil inside. ADORBZZ!

I miss my puppy 😦

Also, yeah, I realize puppies cost more short and long term than 500 bucks. Sue me, I can dream.

9. What is your favorite piece of art (painting, sculpture, architecture…)?

Hmmm… that’s a toughie as I don’t really go and venture out much to take a look at art. One piece that means a lot to me is this piece that hangs on the wall in my apartment…

20140504-201953.jpgIt was painted by one of my supervisors at work, Rachel, as a secret santa gift to me. Her perception of my lil biking self. 🙂 Homemade gifts are always so much better than bought ones!

10. If you were able to go back in time and give your teenage self any advise what would you say?

Get some confidence and stop worrying so much about EVERYTHING. But for the most part, stop worrying about what others think and about pleasing everyone. In all honesty, I never had much confidence in school years. Even all the way up into high school I was severely lacking in that area. With University life beginning, I began to branch out a bit more socially, found more confidence from the gym and the independence I had never had before AND began seeing my boyfriend who helped to build me up. He may never know how much he did for me, but all I can say is that, today, I feel like a did a 180 confidence wise and a big part of that confidence has come from his love, support and positive outlook of my abilities.

So tell me friends….

What superpower would you have?

What place would be your dream destination?

What advice would you give your teen self?

Spill It, Sundays #1

Hey Friends

Speaking of spilling, I have a confession To Spill before we get started…

I have a new #BlogCrush. Shhhh don’t tell.

I recently checked out Mr. Arman’s blog (at The Big Man’s World) and I have to say that I’m hooked. His posts are truly an inspiration to read not to mention they are fun and quite informative as well. I really appreciate how the topics he presents are totally relevant to some of the things I’m currently struggling with nutritionally and it makes me sit back and take a hard look at my own diet and contemplating if certain changes and/or experimentation might be of use to me. A great, light-hearted and comical blogger he is and I would totally recommend checkin him out! #SharingTheLove

Anyways, enough secret spilling and onto the topic of the day…which is also a link-up from Arman’s blog I might add…

Spill-ItThis fun lil link up is all about Spillin Your Stuff based on the weeks theme so that us bloggers can get to know all the other HLB (Healthy Living Bloggers/Community) members a lil bit better.

This is the best time for me to jump into this partay as it’s all about one of my favourite meals (and a favourite to everyone else here it seems!)…

Show me your breakfastBreakfast!

Let’s begin shall we?

Selfie Time!

Now I’m not really one for selfies…in fact I really despise taking pictures of myself because I never think they look good but if I must…

20140427-175936.jpgOh just me sortin through food pics for this post! …In PJ’s I might add…:-D #LifeOfAFoodBlogger

Now you see why I don’t do selfies….

What is your classic go to breakfast choice?

If you have been following me for a bit you know there is really only one answer here…

Oatmeal…

20140427-193416.jpg…and more oatmeal

20140427-193404.jpgZee Rest Day Zoats.

Proats. Zoats. Whatever! As long as it’s pipin hot and topped with goodies (why hello there nut butter, Questie turds and melted fruit :-P), it’s heaven in a bowl for me. I have done baked oatmeal in the past, and it’s good too, but always go back to my mushy bowl of goodness. Drroool.

Favourite sweet style breakfast?

Let me repeat myself sloooowwllly…

20140427-074647.jpgCinnamon Swirl eggy-chia proats topped with 1/4 of a cookie dough Questbar and a tsp each of raw cashew butter and Nuts n’More Toffee peanut butter.

Oatmeal addict in the house. Proats are the way to this girls heart.

Favourite savoury style breakfast?

Does savory and breakfast belong in the same sentence? I kid. I kid. 😉 I know many of you love your savory breaky’s I just never have’m. If I did though, it may look something like a chunk of sweet tater or, better yet, kabocha with a blob of nut butter along side a veggie egg scramble of sorts. I have very much been intrigued by the idea of putting nut butter on a sweet tater or squash because they are both my favs BUT this combo threatens my addiction to them both being savory and never sweet. No cinnamon or syrup has ever come anywhere near my taters or squash. Not Ever!

OR Leah Peter’s breakfast plates

Screen shot 2014-04-27 at 8.01.35 PMException! A nut butter of some kind would be added to these oats. Breakfast is not breakfast without nut butter IMO!

Spill it! I used to have an omelet on the side of my oatmeal back in the day (lol last year) when I hadn’t figured out that adding my egg whites to my oatmeal is beyond amazing for not only fluffiness but also VOLUME! Bigger and puffier oats that last me longer >>>>> flat oats + omelet.

I know that’s still not the most savory breakfast, but work with me here! That’s as far as I will stretch! 😉

Share a breakfast recipe you are a fan of- It can be your own or another bloggers!

I don’t really stray that often but here’s one of my oldies that was quite yummy! My Vanilla Banana Chunk Oatmeal ‘Cake.’ Recipe here.

Those Sprinkles!

Oh and the first time I made Crystal’s (Spoonful Of Fit) fluffy coconut pancakes! Recipe here.

Who doesn't love pancake porn?

Who doesn’t love pancake porn?

Strangest breakfast you’ve ever eaten?

Technically this wasn’t really breakfast as it was quite late for that BUT it was my first meal of that day.

20140427-074634.jpgWasn’t this exact bowl of goodies that day, just an idea of what I tend to get. This was actually my dinner last night.

Whole Foods #BowlOfStuff. This is definitely NOT MY NORMAL! It was after that huge snow storm we had around Christmas that left me stranded in Toronto. Once we actually got the car running, we made a dash to Whole Foods for some much needed (was eating my arm off at this point..) fuel!

Do you have a typical breakfast routine?

My day always starts off with eating. GET OATMEAL IN ME NOW! I’m hungry what can I say? What I’m eating (okay so they’re not that different…it’s still oatmeal…) and what occurs after my breakfast depends on whether I’m lifting that morning or not.

Training Day. Proats + off to the gym for 7:30am

Rest Day. Zoats with berries + prep for work + nap + work.

Love my 2-a-week rest day naps! 😉

So tell me….

What’s your favourite sweet breakfast? Savory?

Weirdest thing you have eaten for breakfast?

Thanks again to Arman for the Link-up!
