Why I Eat What I Eat…WIAW

My friends,

So I haven’t done a WIAW in such a long time. To be honest, I didn’t want to be judged for my food choices. I often felt that people would believe that I was restricting because I tend to eat the same things every day and say that I don’t ever get cravings for ‘bad foods’

The notion of ‘bad’ foods was simply for a lack of a better term. Think of foods as more or less nutrient dense. There are no BAD foods. Well okay maybe some could be argued to fall into that category, but when looking at foods that are not made specifically to give you a heart attack, this is how food should be looked at.

These are meant to show others what a healthy lifestyle means to a person and to perhaps give some ideas or find a new combo to try. It’s never about judgement.

I like my food, my food makes my body feel the best it can be (well when my stomach is content for the day) and it has been working for me and my current goals.

Disclaimer: Never think you need to eat the same way as anyone other than yourself. You have your own needs. My food is for my training and to help my current GI issues.

So onto the post. I’m going to preface this with an “I’m Sorry” for some failed meal snaps…my bad friends. I hope you enjoy the commentary as a make up.

Thanks to Laura, Arman and Jen for this fun lil linkup. Check out all of the other fun eats at Laura’s today.

wiaw-new

So for today’s commentary I wanted to give an overview as to WHY I eat some of the things that I do. Mostly, its for healing my gut and allowing for the easiest digestion, but I will share with you my reasonings below.

Please note that I’m on a low fiber and easy to digest diet post parasite treatment for a lil but because I have literally no bacteria in my gut following two rounds of antibiotics

Pre-Breaky Supps

~shot of ACV diluted with water

Benefits: umpteen, but I take it mostly for the digestion aid and prebiotic factors

Breakfast. Loaded cream of rice

Why I eat it? Cuz I love it. Duh

Okay benefits of this for tummy.

~COR less fiber than my beloved oats so it digests nicer. And, carbs. Nuff said.

~Egg whites: need my protein yeah?

~Pineapple: Contains bromelain which is a natural digestive enzyme. Plus I like it.

~Pink Salt: I need added salt in my diet because I don’t get sodium from processed food and athletes need to ensure adequate electrolytes. Plus salt and peanut butter? Nommzzz

img_9556

Sorry 6am cream of rice ain’t too aesthetic so heres everything in my breakfast (forgot pink salt+cinnamon). 35g brown COR made with unsweetened cashew milk. 90g egg whites cooked in half way through. Add-ins are 30-35g banana/15-20gpineapple, 16g organic crunchy peanut butter + some peanuts, sprinkle of peanut flour, cinnamon and pink salt

Also with breakfast, I take a digestive enzyme pre-eating and than after is a small amount of spirulina mixed with vitamin C powder in a shot glass with some water. I also take Vitamins E, A, D and a probiotic. It seems like a lot but we are trying to heal right? Lots of antioxidants and anti-inflammatories.

Pre-Workout

I used to have sweet potatoes with this meal, but experienced A LOT of bloating and gas (sorry TMI) so despite my resistance (I love sweet taters!), white jasmine rice took it’s place. Quick and fast to digest and gives me the carbs I need without the GI symptoms. Avocado is there for a bit of added fat (I can’t tolerate a huge amount of avocado, that has been discovered…its high FODMAP and rings in a decent amount of fiber) for some staying power through my 2 hour lifting sessions.

img_9555

135g white jasmine rice + 3.5 ounces roasted chicken breast + 1 ounce avocado. Seasoned with fresh cilantro and a **it ton of cumin + chili powder and liquid smoke

*Another digestive enzyme…cough these things cost me an arm.

Intra-Workout

In my bottle for during my lift, I put in a scoop each of my BCAAs and glutamine. The BCAAs I began using to prevent my body from using my protein stores for energy as my workouts are very long and I was underweight. I still use them for this reason + it helps me to take in enough water. The glutamine is for both muscle recovery and also is gut fuel. Glutamine has been found to feed the GI tract and help with it’s recovery.

img_9557

Intraworkout BCAAs and Glutamine

Post-Workout

This is honestly something I look forward to every day. I don’t really have a sweet tooth but something about this is just so satisfying to me. All whole foods but makes me feel like I’m getting a treat. Its a ‘great job for killing your workout’ indulgence.

Reasonings:

~Rice again..in rice cake form. These are not your cardboard Quaker rice cakes. NO. These babies have double the carbs and therefore taste so much better. They actually taste like puffed rice. These are a carb staple in my diet.

~Coconut oil: Simply added to the ‘icing’ for added calories that I can’t see as added bulk.

~Whey: I have tried eating whole proteins and they just take too long to digest when my body is literally shaking. Whey is much faster and prevents me from getting sleepy. I only buy New Zealand whey as it’s lactose free, no antibiotics and the cows are grass-fed. The ingredients are just whey, enzymes and natural flavouring. Their flavours are amazing!

img_9558

3.5 organic brown rice cakes (Lundberg–> much better tasting! higher carbs= no styrofoam taste) + Protein ‘icing’ of 1 tsp coconut oil, 25g whey (I used maple), 1 tsp crunchy peanut butter, 15g melted banana and enough water to form a paste. Topped with 35g nanner.

And you guess it…2 more enzymes. I take two because I think the whey makes me a bit bloaty if I don’t have the extra one. Before anyone asks, no I cannot eat vegan protein. I can’t digest quinoa or any sprouted grains other than rice. Plus it tastes like assssss..sorry but it’s true.

Unpictured ‘bite’

My post workout is around 2-2:30pm, and I take my fish oil in between than and dinner but like to have something in my tummy with it as without anything it can lead to gas (hello fish burps) so I down a bit of chicken in the fridge.

1 tbsp of lemon juice before to help with fat digestion.

Dinner.

Lobster is a special occasion when my Dad comes down. He so nicely brought some for me and of course I opened that baby the next day..

I have my vegetables for the day here…so sad. I have a small salad (unpictured) to start with all easy to digest/ low FODMAP veggies (cucumber, carrots, iceberg lettuce and some dark greens, not kale or anything). I love veggies but cannot have too much.

I have roasted mini potatoes and kabocha pictured here. To be honest, I hate potatoes, so bland to me compared to sweet taters even with seasoning, but I can’t have my sweets right now and I need carbs. Kabocha is a staple (cuz what person doesn’t adore it?), but should be limited due to being a high FODMAP and to be honest I think I have been over doing it a bit recently (anyone else find it bloats you?) because of aforementioned hatred for potatoes.

And no, I eat rice all damn day so I don’t want rice for my nice sit down meal of the day.. lol. Oh and yes, enzyme number 100000 for the day and a shot of ACV.

img_9531

Lobster (thanks Dad) + roasted kabocha and baby potatoes. Unpictured salad to start with dressing of ACV+ lemon juice+ herbs+ mustard

Night Meal

Unpictured ~5 ounces of haddock attacked with turmeric because no one needs to see that…

Eaten in bed. It may seem weird to you to eat fish before bed and than pair it with rice cakes and nut butter. I like to think of it as the meal and dessert.

The fish is simply more protein (read below before you yell at me for eating too much protein…), the turmeric is for anti-inflammatory properties and the rice cakes are simply for more carbs.

The reason I have mostly peanut butter with a shmear of almond butter is because my coach really wanted me to try to rotate almond butter with peanut butter because peanuts have a risk of moulds and such I believe..

…but I just can’t (TEAM PB!). So there, I have some almond butter.

😀

Also yes there the nut butter is strategically placed. I like a big glob for the last bite okay. Common there has to be another person out there who saves the best for last no?

img_9553

2 Organic, unsalted brown rice cakes (Lundberg) + 20g organic crunchy peanut butter and 5g organic crunchy almond butter

Shot of lemon juice (cuz that’s a large amount of fat according to my body) + …enzyme.

So yeah, can you tell that rice is a staple for an annoying stomach? It’s my major carb source in various forms because it sits well and gives me the carbs I need for my training. We are still being very, VERY modest with fat increases because my system doesn’t handle  those very well. I try to help this by taking a shot of lemon juice before a higher fat meal as acid helps to hydrolyze the fats a bit (i.e. help break them down). Also, yes my protein intake is high. It is what it is (for the moment..). It gives me calories and my system is okay at the amount it has right now. Can’t take any away if it cannot be replaced

Know what I’m saying?

So there is my day of eats. Very typical, as it’s pretty much the same every day with a few switch ups (fish type at dinner, choice of whey, etc) but I do that because 1. I like my food and I’m a creature of habit and 2. because it doesn’t turn my stomach into a raging….umm.monster.

Hope you enjoyed!

Anyone else out there okay with eating the same things every day?

Similar food restrictions?

More Food = More Gains

Friends! Today has been a really great day thus far and to share that happiness with you I thought I would jump into the link up party

week-in-review-button-final

Lovely Link-up created by the wonderful Meghan

…cuz I have been feeling and receiving all kinds of happy lately. Also the ‘list all your achievements’ theme is quite fitting this week.

1. I’m sorry I’m happy while everyone down south is angry AF still post election. But we won’t get into that because politics is just something you don’t touch.

kids

…Moving on….

2. My lifts…omg I amaze myself. The small increases I do with my coach every two weeks are lighting me up like a firecracker I kid you not. I started to wonder why I’m progressing so much faster strength wise now than I was with my previous coach. At that time I was getting much, MUCH larger increases compared to now and, yes, I was progressing, but not at this rate.

I thought about it hard and figured it’s probably having to do with the fact that my system is healing itself now. Back earlier in the year, it was overwhelmed being overfed and dealing with all the health problems (cough parasites..) and so I think that with those dealt with (I hope!) my body is now less stressed and less inflamed so perhaps now during this healing process it’s just going to get better and better.

So those PR’s…Excuse me while I grin like a crazy person…I’m just so happy about them!

~I squatted 4×3, 1×5 135lb back squats this past Friday. Thats up 1 whole set and 1 rep from last week. NOTE that this may small but its actually about 1.6x my bodyweight. My goal is 4×8 by Xmas. Getter!

~100lb DL this morning. DL have always been my weakest lift, so I was pretty damn proud of this lift, especially since I have felt stalled for a few weeks

~30lb DB shoulder presses this Saturday

~135lb Rack pull for 5

~135lb barbell hip thrusters.

~100lb barbell lunges for sets of 8

So yeah, excuse my pride face..

tina-fey-giving-herself-high-five

3. Started off my morning right today with news that I had gotten a 90% on my clinical midterm. Once again I was terrified to check because everyone else was spouting about how bad they felt they did. I need to learn to trust my gut.

4. On the topic of marks, 88% for Metabolism and another 90% in Nutrition Assessment ain’t too shabby either.

grades

5. I managed to finish a Clinical assignment in 1.5 hours on Saturday. Holler at that productivity.

6. I have been writing training plans for my housemate and she told me how thankful she was for them because she has never felt so good about herself.

Follow me at @lilmisscross!

Gym = more confidence in everything! Its not just about aesthetics.

7. This will be my 4th blog post this week!

8. I welcomed myself back into vlogging! I’m so happy to be back.

9. I have done the monkey work for my Master/Internship applications. Goals for the next two weeks is to crack down on those letters of intent/cover letters

10. Wrote a leg routine for two people at the gym and they absolutely loved it. I than so graciously received a Tims gift card, which was totally not needed or asked for but she insisted. So nice.

11. I made a peanutty version of these cookies and everyone loved them!

chia

12. I reconnected with a friend who moved away this year (Oh hey Cass if you’re reading this). It was so nice to hear from her and catch up!

13. One of my clients told me that he was so happy that he found me because I have helped him so much. Daaawww

14. Finally took my ass to Canadian Tire to get a spare key for my Dad. Than I got an even cooler key so my Dad gets the boring original…

img_9550

I swear I am an adult. Can I call it Mighty Mouse?

PS please ignore the U.G.L.Y callouses on my hands…gym problems.

14. Three people have told me that I’m looking strong! I’m growing friends!

15. I left the gym on Friday feeling a sense of complete and utter bliss. I had trained my ass off that morning, hit my squat PR, trained both a client and my housemate and spent 1.5 hours trying to eat my post workout because everyone was chatting with me. I just feel like I’m supposed to be there. I’m supposed to help others and give information. It was a great feeling. Passion, I like you.

16. I forced my housemates to enter the Christmas season nice and early with me by putting these on their doors ;-).. Spread a lil love…

img_9549

Penguin for me (cuz I love them!), elephant for Em (cuz likewise) and a beautiful Xmas sweater for Rita because they didn’t have a turtle…(her nickname lol)

And with the spirit of Xmas now in our hearts, I will end it here. Overall a great week filled with a lot of great things. Heres to further growth and positivity my friends!

Thanks again to Meghan for giving me a platform to share my successes and happy moments of the week.

I’ll Start On Monday…

My new diet starts on Monday

Starting Monday, I will live in the gym

My new body transformation will start on Monday

I will be a better me….

Starting on Monday.

start on monday

Happy September 1st friends. New month and this month in particular tends to be associated with the “after-summer fresh new goals” to reach before the new year.

We all see it….Similar to the New Year resolution season, with the return of school comes the new gym go-ers, the new dieters who want to loose all their summer weight plus more by Christmas, and people making plans/goals that surround making a fairly significant change in their life.

This is like a whole month of “I will start on Monday” and unfortunately this mentality often leads to starting changes as of September 1st and ending sometime between September 10th and October 1st. It’s a sad reality, and personally, a mentality that I often just cannot understand.

You see, I am fully supportive of goals. Goals that are something that lead to personal growth and bettering yourself. So yes, goals are great. What I don’t understand is why self-improvement has to be seen as a punishment or something to be delayed to a later date. In this case, after the weekend.

Why wait to better yourself?

I ask myself this question often when someone says that famous phrase to me…

should get my shit together

Here’s how I see it…

1. Your goal is unrealistic

2. Your goal is seen as a punishment

3. Its just not a priority enough

Either way, the chances of them lasting is slim to none. Take the gym as an example, we all dread the gym being packed, but always know that the stampede will clear in a few short weeks.

This is awful to admit because it’s great that people want to become more fit and I welcome those who want to improve upon their health and become stronger versions of themselves, but this is really just observation at it’s finest.

So lets look at the first point. Your goal will NOT be reached if you are looking at something as an “all of nothing” type of deal. I will cut X from my diet forever. I will go to the gym 2 hours a day, EVERYDAY, I will live off of salad…etc, etc. These are NOT realistic or attainable for anyone nor should they be thought to be required for bettering your health. These overly loafty goals are often pushed to Monday because you are wanting to be ‘free’ before you feel that life is going to suck.

6627afcadcdedb97dfd49e00e34d9092f9

This is why they fail. All-or-nothing goals will never work. Take one thing and change that. Make this a lifestyle by making something manageable.

~I will start by going to the gym 3 times a week

~I will turn out the lights 30 minutes earlier 3 times a week

~I will pack up my own lunch rather then buying out for work/school

So what about #2?

Sometimes people go into making changes because they feel they have to. Got a bad doctors report? The prescription –> get yo ass to the gym and loose 20 pounds. Doctors orders. You may feel the need to do it, but that doesn’t mean you’re gunna like it.

My new life starts on Monday.

Or what about writing that paper you need to get done. You know that sitting down and writing rather then enjoying time with friends sucks, so, push it off until Monday. Not only are you loosing time and probably adding stress to your life (plus loosing sleep), you probably ended up using some of that time doing something mindless because you told yourself you were gunna start later.

Ever done that? You have the time to kill but have already accepted that later start date so you don’t use that spare time effectively?

Instead, do an hour here and there over that weekend in between socializing. That’s not that big of a commitment, you aren’t spending hours in a chair slaving typing away and come Monday, look you have half your paper at least drafted.

When you look at something as a punishment or something that is being forced on you, you won’t want to do it. Nonetheless, how is moving it to a later date making it anything less then what you currently perceive it as? Punishment derived goals also fail because you have set your mind up that you hate this thing and that it is required of you to do. There is no internal driving force for you to want to do it.

Time to change your mindset.

Something may suck but turn it around to something positive. Need to change your lifestyle due to health issues? Make it a challenge to yourself in some way or take it upon yourself to try something new that you may end up loving. Find a recipe that you love and make it more nutrient dense. Work your way up to doing some race or lifting a certain weight. Don’t focus on the required target as if it is something ‘forced on you’ because that will just breed negativity. Instead, tell yourself that this is for you and make it something you want to do for yourself.

The last one is one that really hits most people hard. A certain goal or challenge may be a great learning opportunity or something that would really benefit a person but they just don’t do it.

Why wouldn’t they want to do something that simply makes them a better version of themselves?

It’s not a priority.

Yeah it may be great and all but it’s not important enough to them to make that change. That is a sad reality, but often times this is common and people miss out on a lot of great things and chances.

…..

So, overall I think that goals are great. They are visions. They are about helping to make yourself the best you can be. They fuel you to push and challenge yourself BUT that is only if you do them and take them seriously.

Ask yourself why wait to do something you want. Why hesitate to make yourself better. Want to make a change? DO IT RIGHT NOW!

…Or you may just let the chance slide on away from you and miss out.

It’s simply your choice.

Fad Lifestyles, Gym Newbs…Thinking Out Loud

Thinking-Out-Loud-2

My friends I have a lot to think out loud this week, so lets get started right off the bat shall we?

Thanks to the lovely Amanda from Running with Spoons for being the hostess to the mostess.

1. Maggie on my Mind

Here I was saying I’m an adult and everything and was going to be just fine when Rita left, but day 2 it hit me hard. You know that ‘down’ feeling, yeah that was me. I try my hardest to still smile (okay I don’t have to try that hard to smile, its just me) because smiling just makes you feel better, but I would be lying if I said that I didn’t have a bit of a dark cloud floating over me the past few days. It is perfect timing for me to go home this weekend and spend time with my familia and I have to say I just want snuggles…

IMG_8837.jpg

Of the puppy variety.

Is it bad that I have been ‘craving’ having a dog a lot recently…Ugh. Come to me money! Or better yet, can I just have one and it not cost me anything and never get sick… ever?

You know you’re desperate when you start wanting a cat just because you want a snuggle friend and they are less baby-like in their needs…

2.The gym is not a playground FYI

Not to sound like a preacher, but for real, take the gym seriously and don’t be an idiot when you come into the gym. I’m going to sound sexist here, but this specifically applies to guys because most often girls will run away to the cardio section when they are not sure (which is not the answer either!) rather then just being plain stupid.

Okay so that was a bit harsh, but I really don’t feel like seeing someone die when I’m in my domain.

Screen Shot 2016-07-20 at 8.34.39 AM.png

Pardon my lack of spell checkin…slips happen when you are speaking with irritation passion

This most often happens when said individuals are not only newbs but also when they decide to bring their newb friend(s) with them too. Multiples just increase the stupidity that occurs.

Screen Shot 2016-07-20 at 8.36.21 AM.png

And they just laugh…after they barely rack the bar and the guy crawls out from underneath it.

Just sits there and shakes my head.

Screen Shot 2016-07-20 at 8.36.22 AM.png

And when you don’t succeed, try again with more weight? Cuz that makes perfect sense

And fail again. Like actual fail and once again, spotter barely racks it with 50 extra pounds. Unfortunately in cases like this, it generally takes an injury for them to smarten up a bit.

Let me say something before someones like “you talk **it but why didn’t you step in”. One, I wish I could lift 150+lbs just so maybe I could show them up (plus ya ya save their life and everything). And two the spotter did manage to get it on the bottom rung (i.e. two inches from the guys face…).

Please note how there were numerous GUYS around these two and they did nothing…

Speaking of which…

3. Girls vs. Guys

We apparently think very differently. I went over to talk to a gym friend of mine about said newbs and his response to my “They’re freaking me out because I would rather not see someone die this morning…”

You apparently have a bigger heart then me, I would laugh if it fell on their face.

Now before you judge my friend, please note that most guys would have said the same thing. Call it tough love. They are being idiots, so the guys logic is that maybe if they actually loose it, maybe they will learn their lesson…plus get a bit of entertainment.

gym-help

Lets be realistic here, guys often get a kick out of seeing other guys pain.

4.Eating Like a Caveman…

Check out this podcast as this inspired this lil rant thought.

To the paleo folks, did you know that you have been depriving yourselves?

Of oat gains!

That’s serious.

New research has pointed out the fact that Palaeolithic people did in fact eat grains. BLASPHEMY! In fact, a new paper was published (and discussed in the podcast) on a new tool that was discovered that has traces of a type of oat fiber suggesting that it was used to grind the grains into a flour.

So yeah….Sorry?

They also touched on some other forms of ‘dieting’ that I wanted to mention.

Intermittent Fasting

This is no miracle solution to loosing weight, but rather just a different way to space out your calories for the day. Mr. Dolce happened to mention that he had tried and and felt like absolute crap for the 3 months he was on it.

No PR’s

No Strength

No Energy

Why make life hard on yourself?

Eat something before you train and fuel your body to make gains. Simple as that.

Exception may be for runners who get sick with running on full. Perhaps eating something very quick to digest is best, but go with your gut. Pun intended.

IIFYM (If It Fits Your Macros)

I discussed a while back about this and what it was actually supposed to address when it was first released but they give great basic information as to why eating whole foods, rather then processed crap, is really how to keep your body weight in check. No, I’m not saying you need to eat clean 100% of the time to maintain your weight, I’m saying that eating wholesome makes a huge difference in satiety and often leaves you eating the calories your body needs. IE. Not in excess.

He said something very real..

Have you ever seen someone sit down and eat 3 apples? Not really. 4 donuts, yes.

The truth is that the satiety of the fiber and water from the apple often leaves you not wanting more due to feeling full and satisfied. The sugary, easy to digest foods leave you feeling unsatisfied and wanting more. Unfortunately, the latter is much higher in calories and can easily put you over your maintenance and lead to weight gain if consistently indulged in.

In other ranting news…

5.Why Do People Still Hate On Carbs.

Ugh I know that education on this topic is not there yet but it kind of infuriates me to hear people saying that I’m cutting carbs to loose weight or body fat.

Guys, no macronutrient (carbs/pro/fat) are the “fat storing macros.” If you go over your calories you will gain weight. You could eat over your cals in lettuce and you would gain weight. Don’t try that though because that may be painful…

Carbs bring with them a lot of water (about equal water per gram of carbs) so often people may reduce them to feel ‘slimmer’ just due to water loss but that is it. It’s not fat you are loosing. ITS WATER!

Okay rant over. Let me unruffle my feathers…

Disclaimer. I’m talking about carbs in general. Some people will avoid all carbs, including natural sources (oats, sweet potatoes, rice, etc) thinking that weight loss will follow. I’m not talking about cereal, sugar, etc

6. Bunny Therapy?

I just discovered that the pet store near my house lets you hold newborn bunnies just because. They just messed up because imma be there ERRYDAY!

cuddle bunny

OMG I just can’t get over my joy.

…or over that baby bunny. Uh Oh…

7.The Best Compliment.

“You look like you’re an athlete.”

Screen Shot 2016-07-21 at 10.02.03 AM

This is when strength and athleticism has surpassed aesthetics for the reasons why you work out, you know there is passion there. Find what you love because that is when it will stick and that is when you will progress.

I workout for me because I love it and I love getting stronger. I don’t work out because I feel that is required to have a certain body type.

…..

Well I’m off to lift real soon, so I’m gunna close it off there. I will be heading out for a nice lil hike post lift with a friend of mine to catch up which will be real nice…and maybe I will drag her back to the bunny shop…

I have a problem okay. At least I admit it.

Happy Thursday Friends!

Fuzzy Females…Thinking Out Loud Thursdays

My friends I haven’t been able to document some of my randomness on zee blog in a while but this week there have just been waaaayyyyy too many things that I have actually put some thought into and some of those need to be shared.

Now some of these things may be slightly controversial and I’m not trying to come off as judgemental as, remember, these are my own thoughts. Please don’t get mad with me as I’m just sharing my honest thoughts. I enjoy being open with you all and I hope to start some discussion or maybe just some pondering in your own minds if you’re not ready to jump into the comments section yet.

Thanks to Amanda for the link-up!

1. My Love Goes Out To France.

How much can one place take? Attacked on a national holiday, I cannot begin to understand. My support and love goes out everyone affected. I’m sorry that you have to experience this at all, let alone AGAIN in such a short time span.

2. Hairy Canary…

Okay, so I saw this whole female empowerment movement not too long ago on Facebook discussing how it was unfair that women should be “forced” to shave. Instead, women should be allowed to bare it all….

Fuzzy Pits.

Hairy Legs.

Chin Whiskers?

Then it quieted down. I thought okay, maybe that was a blip of insanity (before you jump all over me, wait until I get to my reasoning..) but nope, it’s back again.

I can’t say I support the whole Cave Woman thing. Sorry ladies.

hairy

If someone were to ask me why I think women should shave I would answer simply with…

“I would feel gross and self-conscious with hair here, there and everywhere”

Notice the use of the word “I”…

I’m not saying that I think every woman SHOULD BE FORCED to shave away her beloved hair if she chooses not to. Go right on ahead and show off an armpit bush if you so choose but I cannot say that I wouldn’t have an automatic feeling of ickness if I saw it.

Sorry I’m just being honest here.

Yes our society has formed the standard that women don’t have hair and must get rid of it if they do. I know this, I was a psych student after all. So I know the power of social media on our own views and attitudes. I just really don’t like it on myself and just cannot stop the immediate uncomfortableness when it has gotten out of hand on a female.

I’m not talking about peach fuzz or “oops forgot to shave on morning” stubble here, I’m talking like long-ass hair mmmkay just so we are on the same page.

To defend myself, I will say that I’m really not sexist on this topic. I don’t like it on either sex.

Yes. For guys, I don’t like chest hair, stomach hair, arm pit hair that looks like an afro and long back hair. Sorry I just don’t.

Think of the sweat and stank that builds up in there. Ewww.

To think of not shaving my under arms then wearing a tank just plain grosses me out so therefore…

Team Dare to be Bare.

3. Love Who You Are

I have mentioned her time and time again in my blog but she deserves yet another shoutout for this video in particular. Em Dunc is quite the inspiration and I just love listening to her motivationals.

This one really stuck out to me because it’s about loving your confidence (and other qualities in general) and not being ashamed of it.

I have been very open with how proud I am at how far I have come with my confidence but these days sometimes I feel almost sorry for my confidence. It sounds silly but sometimes you get certain reactions from people who maybe aren’t at the same level of confidence as you are and you start to feel as if you need to tone it down for their sake. Or even worse, feel self-conscious about it!

Emily is so right when she talks about being unapologetic for who she is. She is confident and should never feel bad for it or feel she comes off too strong. That is who she is and if people cannot handle that or appreciate that strength, then they can move along.

I shouldn’t have to tone my personality down for anyone because those who care and love me will appreciate those things about me.

They are strengths not weaknesses.

3. Gotta Catch’em All…

Is anyone else saddened by the fact that Pokemon Go is getting praise for getting kids active?

Pokemon Go hands on

We have stooped to a new low that we need video games to get kids off their asses and away from the TV and computers.

No, kids don’t want to play sports anymore. I have the best memories of playing lava land and grounders and staying out as long as we could to play tennis in the dark with the glow in the dark tennis balls and now, kids don’t even want to go outside.

This was only 15 years ago…

Oh times have changed and I would say for the worst.

Also, its not just the kids. Adults are hooked on this crap too and apparently causing accidents and even dying because of this game.

We have officially lost our minds.

5. Oatlicious?

So guys guess who’s proats are going for profits these days?

this girl

Aww yeah. Even if it’s only for like 2 people, it’s a start and hey I like to bake/cook so why not if they enjoy them enough to pay me for them.

Oh the possibilities.

Many thanks to my friend who actually thought my food was more then decent to chat them up to some co-workers. You the real MVP 😀

What should my new home bakery be called? HA.

Anyways, tis late now and I’m going to try to relax while listening to the drunk hooligans outside my window in the rain.

Hope I got some thinking stirring and if I did, talk up a storm in the comments!

YouTube Trends & Thinking Out Loud 5/12

Hey Friends!

I decided to jump into the Thursday funfest, Thinking Out Loud, at Amanda’s blog this week because I had an interesting topic to comment on.

Well, not really a topic but just some things I notice when watching my favourite fitness YouTuber’s. If you’re a fellow fan of the fitness world on YouTube I want to hear what you think! Do you notice these things too?

Let’s start thinkin out loud shall we?

Face Framing

Super Random…Do you ever notice how many female YouTuber’s do the whole “straight hand under the chin like a frame” thing when they are talking straight to camera?

I’m not mocking anyone, it’s just funny. It’s like “I’m being awkward but I kinda cute at the same time.”

But for real though, what do you do with your other hand when you have that camera pointed at you?

Donut Care, I’m Obsessed

What is with the fitness industry and donuts? Doughnuts…Canadian eh?

Annnnyways…

Yeah. I’m not really sure where this came from but people have gone from being obsessed with Poptarts to now donuts.

12501789_1680974085508882_1597283660_n

Like, people actually macro hoard for these things…

There’s are companies thriving off this addiction:

Doughnuts and Deadlifts.

The Dough Bar donuts

To each their own, but now I feel old school with my ice cream obsession. Donuts just aint for me in that way.

Humpday is erryday

The butt pose is actually a thing now.

There are videos explaining how to ‘buttpose’ I’m not joking.

I look at it as funny (most times, if it’s consistent then I just think it’s sad) but if you’re feeling particularly feminist, it can be slightly insulting in the sense that the largest accounts are those that have constant booty shots.

Ladies, you are better then your booties.

Physique updates are one thing…if you’re feeling glute gains then say it! Embrace the gains and your hard work.

…but then there is this..

Screen-Shot-2013-10-18-at-14.42.21-2.png

Clearly NOT a physique update..

I’m sorry but posts like this have no use. There really is nothing you can say relative to fitness or health or anything…

All this says is:

HEY LOOK AT MY ASSSSSS—-EETTTTS

Gymsesh or Photoshoot?

This is not something I have an issue with, but just something I have noticed more and more as of late.

Fashion has become a huge part of the YouTube fitness scene.

Lulu’s errrryywhere! <– not that I’m mad about that

In almost every video, the vlogger makes mention of what they are currently wearing because humpteen thousand viewers will ask what pants are those, what brand is that, etc, etc.

It’s an interesting new side to the fitness Youtube world and it’s funny how it makes you want to go out and buy all the new fun gym clothes too.

My wallet is not impressed, but hey, don’t you workout better when you’re lookin on point?

My overall thoughts. I like this new side.

Speaking of looks…

Leg warmers in the gym.

Another trend is the leg warmer thing.

All year round.

Don’t you ladies get hot?

Another side note…

Notice anything similar?

Current gym fashion movement if you haven’t heard is high waisted leggings and a crop top.

What do you think of this look? Girls? Guys?

Personally, I’m okay with it to some degree. I think that it doesn’t work for all body types but for us shorties, the whole cropped look can really help extend our lil legs and thus work well for our proportions.

Plus, I will say that crop tops make you feel all kinds of cool and free IMO.

Overall, in terms of style there are a few bloggers who have caught my eye for their taste.

Emily has it going on. Her style is casual yet sexy-chic with a touch of sporty. I’m in love!

Link for her Instagram.

Side note…hair envy much?

 I also love Mizz Nikki B’s style…

..both in and out of the gym.

And finally, Robin has a cute trendy thing going on as well…Lulu-Style. I want all of her clothes!

Screen Shot 2016-05-11 at 4.59.19 PM.png

Lulu-chic 😀

Side note…#BootyEnvy. She built up that booty with her infamous lower body days. Check out her channel for her workouts.

Kitten-kats

The first time I heard someone say hi to their YouTube fam using the title ‘Kitten Kats’ it was Em Dunc’s channel. Ever since, I have heard quite the number of other YouTuber’s using the same catch-phrase when addressing their viewers.

My thoughts: I always think that the second and third person to say the same thing sounds almost forced. I’m not yelling:

“You a copy cat!”

..but it always catches me as second-hand ya know?

Well I suppose that is enough YouTube speak for the night. Sorry for this being super random, but I really love watching my fav ‘tubers and they give me inspiration so I wanted to share that a lil bit with you PLUS I wanted to see what you thought of some of the common occurrences/trends

So to finish off, I will give you my current top 3 guy and girl channels. I like a lot more (especially female channels) but as soon as these guys put up a new video, I always jump on it.

Not in a particular order

Girl Tuber’s

1. Emily Duncan–> Such a positive channel. Whether she’s in prep or not, she is very down to earth and positive. I really enjoy her videos and her take on even the tough situations plus she kicks ass in the gym and it shows.

2. Kara Corey –> I loved her prep series (not that I didn’t love her videos before) and all the info and tips she was giving.

3. Amanda Bucci –> Just started her prep and she’s doing it powerlifting and IIFYM style which is very interesting.

Okay okay… I can’t limit to 3 for female channels. 4. Is Miss Nikki B and 5. and Heidi Somers.

Guy Tuber’s.

I have recently watched less male channels, I don’t know why they just aren’t on my top radar right now but there are still a few that catch my attention and always watch quickly.

1. Rob Lipsett–> The new kid on the block. He’s from Dublin and he’s really rising on the ‘Tube lately. Love that he’s real and hasn’t let his appearance and quick success swell up his head. Great tips and just entertaining to me to watch.

2. Nick Bare –> Always, I mean ALWAYS informative. I get the same sense of education from his channel as I do with Jeff Nippard (who does amazing “Round Table” discussions with experts that I never pass up)

3. Travis S. –> Forever entertaining and always outrageous with his food porn.

For a final runner up for the guys, Chris Jones is always funny to watch and I have actually gained so many gym tips and exercises from him.

Oh and never miss a Powered By Ice Cream review. Blunt and to the point no matter how offensive. Hilarious to watch and makes me jealous that we don’t get half those amazing flavours/companies here.

Alrighty, donzo I promise.

So what did you all think? Thoughts on any of the trends I talked about?

Thinkin’ Out Loud…Social Media IMO Version

Hey Friends!

You’re almost there. It’s Friday tomorrow, plans for the weekend?

Before I begin on my lil opinion-based post, I want to do a big birthday shoutout to this girl right here…

img_8758

Happy Birthday to my lovely housemate, Emily. After a rough 21st year of life, lets make 22 a lot better mmmkkay?

img_8765

Turned her oatmeal into a massssttaapiece of a double decker cake with a banana flower 😀

I wanted to rant out loud about some of my thoughts on some social media posts as of lately as some have really stuck out to me.

So with that, thanks to Amanda over at Running With Spoons for the hook-up and get ready for some IMO-in’

When Photoshop becomes ‘fitness goals’

img_8768

The last line says it all:

That is unfortunate.

So many of us, myself included, fall for the fakeness that is IG, Fb and all of the other social media platforms. People post pictures using the best light, the least amount of breathing/food/water/etc and max flexing as possible to get the perfect shot.

Then in comes the mass of people who look at that persons picture and say:

“Body Goals!”

Well, not to be blunt, but dem body goals ain’t gunna happen because they’re not real in the first place.

…not to mention you are not them. You are you with your own body and shape.

Always remember that lighting, time of the day, filters AND photoshop do wonders for pictures. Don’t compare yourself to an image that has been created, you will just kill your self esteem.

Speaking of Aesthetics…

Screen Shot 2016-04-28 at 9.52.06 PM

Think about it.

Our world is filled with images of naked bodies to grab attention and gain ‘likes.’ What good does this contribute to the world?

Zip… IMO.

Contribute to your world in more useful ways. Use your skills not your appearance. When that fades, what do you have left? What have you done?

Another one from Miss Dietician Deanna…

Screen Shot 2016-04-28 at 9.51.33 PM

I’m sorry, but does anyone else get slightly offended when someone says oh you’re gunna be a nutritionist when you’re studying dietetics. Please don’t take this as me putting down nutritionists, but in all honesty, you really can become a nutritionist out of thin air while I have to study and work my ass off to get to be a dietician.

Instagrams on firrraahhh with goodies..

Put down the phone. It’s not your third arm. It’s not your heart or lungs. You won’t die without it. It’s okay to let it have a nap for once.

People are incredibly rude these days. When conversing with someone, who the hell do you think you are pulling out your phone like I’m over here for your convince when your phone stops buzzin’

Apparently people are becoming second to a piece of technology and because of it we are forgetting how to talk to others. It’s a big hole we are digging for ourself thats for damn sure.

Wow that got heated real quick…

But now onto Facebook…

My coach’s wife Carol posted this actually and it resonated with me. It’s a sad truth. Often times we feel more supported by those we don’t know then some of our closest friends.

13094295_10153426150476583_8646146234478327926_n

Real talk, if they are stagnant, they’re gunna have a real hard time supporting you, so don’t expect much.

That lil thing called Macrohoarding…

macros.jpg

….when the rest of the day you be like…

poverty macros.jpg

…Poverty Macros.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s one to thing to have a treat or to have fish and vegetables for dinner BUT to intentionally have the least fattening and carby things throughout the day (including around your workout, when, ummm food is kinda important) just so you can have this massive bowl of crap processed foods at night is a bad way of organizing your food.

IMO

An account on IG said it perfectly and I’m mad I didn’t screen shot that post, but she talked about how you can’t really say you are a “fitness addict” or a “health-freak” if you are not fueling your body the best you can when it needs it the most. The critical time frames for you to consider your nutrition is pre and post workout and here you are skimping on that and having a sucky workout and recovery just so you can make this calorie bomb at night and post it on IG.

Hashtag health?

Speaking of #Hashtags…

Oh I’m going to ruffle some feathers here.

Screen Shot 2016-04-28 at 9.12.33 PM.png

PS, Anyone out there still on the Tweeeetterr-train? I just started again and I’m quite enjoying myself I will say. 24-hours of Chelsea randomness.

I won’t go into too much because I can rant on and on about this. Yes, this is a generalization and yes there are some healthy vegetarians out there who understand what their body needs if they choose to cut meat and potentially all animal products from their diets, but for real, the number of sick individuals seems to outweigh the healthy ones IMO.

Don’t argue with me that vegetarian living is the way humans are supposed to be because I will fire right back at you, but if you choose to take on that lifestyle, educate yourself as to what you need to pay special attention to so you don’t turn into a sick, malnourished beanpod.

veglife.jpg

And just for **it’s and giggles

Screen Shot 2016-04-28 at 9.41.56 PM

Ahhh ostriches. Frightening beasts they are…

Well that post came together is less then an hour, guess that means I really wanted to rant on about these things. Thanks for always being my outlet.

Hope you enjoyed and happy Friday Friends!

Please do not be offended by anything that I have said as they are simply my opinions. Many thanks.
