I am now back at home in Hamilton but I wanted to let you guys meet Lil Miss Maggie on her day of birth before I left once again. Sooo she joined me yesterday to answer two reader questions:

Banana Brownie Skillet Cake. ONE NOTE HERE. Their ‘sugar substitute’ is Splenda. Please don’t use that (poison I tell you!). Use Stevia or if you’re okay with more natural, unrefined sugars, use that.

Forget the marshmallows, your S’mores just went bananas…

Grilled Banana S’mores. If you are looking for a healthier, homemade version of graham crackers check out Katie’s genius recipe. Stay away from the agave though and choose a different liquid sweetener.ย 

No recipe needed for this ooey-gooey, fruity treat…

Take a banana, slice’er open (not all the way through!) and stuff with whatever you please. Wrap in tin foil and pop on the grill until nice and gooey and the skin is black. If you’re feeling crazy, throw some ice cream on their or coconut whipped cream for a dairy free and paleo option.

    • I think it’s a big problem honestly! When it comes to something as simple as that, put yourself first! Do what’s best for your body or you will be the one dealing with the consequences later, not anyone else. Others really don’t care as much as we feel they do. ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. I have a question for you ๐Ÿ™‚ Whatโ€™s something you wish you would have known when you were first getting started in health or fitness? I still canโ€™t believe I feared fats for so long. Iโ€™m still making up for lost avocado time.

    • I thought I didn’t like avocados for the longest time because I didn’t know much about them when I first tried one, so I ate one that was super hard and thought it was disgusting lol. Now I’m in the same boat, eat all the avocado!

      Hmmm good question, that’s a toughie. I think the big one for me was that you need more food than you ever thought you did. I still struggle with this today as I eat like a man practically (volume and calorie wise) but I’m still barely maintaining my weight suggesting that I need even more. I tell others (and try so hard with myself) to not compare their eats with others because everybody body is different and has different needs but I can’t help but look at all the food I have to eat compared to another girl larger than me and think that I’m being a ‘pig’ with all that food while they have their chicken and asparagus. I know that’s not healthy or rational because I workout hard, but it’s still something to this day that I’m working on getting past. My body needs a lot of food and calories and that’s something I have to deal with.

  14. Has anyone ever mentioned HOW CUTE you are? My gosh girl, youโ€™re the epitome of I-want-her-wardrobe/I-want-her-hair/Iโ€™d-pay-to-get-her-in-my-kitchen-and-life-for-constant-motivation-to-get-my-butt-in-shape! Ha. Birthdays and holidays (and weekends) are the ultimate test for healthy living and healthy choices, it can be hard but I think itโ€™s just as healthy to not deprive yourself and indulge a little. Those burgers sound delicious , too.

    • aww you’re so sweet! Call me an extremist but holidays never really phase me when it comes to eating the same way I always do. Guess that means I love what I eat. On the other hand, I feel the need to indulge because I feel like I ‘should’ and that I should challenge that irrational voice in my head saying it’s bad so don’t eat it. For me, it’s not that I deprive myself, but it’s more that I need to learn to let something things go. If I crave ice cream, I should be ‘allowed’ to have some.

    Questionโ€ฆ what tips do you have for combatting CRAZY pms cravings and water weight gain?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    • Thank you kindly ๐Ÿ™‚ Hmmm I have never experienced PMS cravings before BUT I can say that cravings generally are associated with deficiencies in some way. Perhaps during that time you are just tired and when you’re body is tired sometimes it can manifest itself in carb cravings (chocolate, sweets, etc the normal PMS associated cravings). You’re not craving the food itself, but youre craving the sugar because your body thinks that is the quickest way to wake you up. When you’re on your period I would suggest making sure you get lots of iron rich foods to combat that tiredness problem and maybe that will help with those cravings. Maybe that will be your time to run out and get a good cut of beef or some shell fish. These both have some of the highest sources of HEME iron which is best absorbed by the body (sorry vegetarians veggie based iron sources, or non-heme iron is not as absorbed). Salmon and other fattier fish, chicken and turkey are also good sources of heme. You can also have those non-heme sources like leafy greens and dark green veggies have good iron in them. Oatmeal, beans/lentils, quinoa are also great choices.

      Lastly, taking your iron source with something high in vitamin C helps with absorption. Really anything colourful is going to have quite a bit of vitamin C. So having a nice colourful salad with your steak or fish would be a good choice! ๐Ÿ™‚

      As for the water, that’s a tougher one and really something you kind of have to deal with. Watch how much processed foods and sodium (not sea salt, particularly SODIUM in packaged foods) you take in as that can just add to the problem. Drink lots of water to flush out your system and some foods like asparagus are natural diuretics that help to rid the body of excess water so chop on some of those and see if that helps.

  16. These are great suggestions! I have been trying the chug a glass a water for every drink. Itโ€™s just remembering to do it. ๐Ÿ™‚ I also like the idea of filling up an app plate rather then a full dinner plate. Luckily, all my friends are veggie friendly like me so at parties we tend to have healthy options. Worse case: I bring the healthy option and eat all my food. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Thanks! You’re worst case doesn’t sound too bad either so you’re all set. Good job on the water too! It can be an adjustment, but it makes you feel better in the end! It’s awesome that you have support from your friends too, that makes it simpler and you don’t tend to worry as much ๐Ÿ™‚

    • That is a good question BUT unfortunately I have no idea what products will be there compared to my location. Obviously they will have way more stuff as the Miss. location is a lot bigger so take an hour and wander around if you’re into that kind of thing like I am. When I went to the upper Gage location one day I spend a good hour wandering the store and picking up new things that I didn’t have in my own location. More cool nut butters to check out, Stevia flavours, BULK BINS! For me, I gain baking inspiration when I go to new places so those are things I look for.

  20. Love your attitude, moderation is so important! If I have a burger I’m gonna have it with real bread, not any low carb substitute. I’d like to kno your opinion on disordered eating in the fitness community; I myself have struggled with orthorexia and bulimia : [ It’s hard to find that thin line! When I was admitted to an inpatient clinic, I found it so difficult to battle those rules I’d made in my head (such as, no drinking calories, no sugar etc.). I felt like the hospital was trying to harm me rather than help me; but I know my way of eating was taking me to a dark place : [ Do you have any suggestions or advice for trying to combat those thoughts when someone else takes control of your eating habits?

    • Thank you! I’m so happy that you are moving forward and leaving those disordered thoughts in the past. I can’t say I am fully at your level yet, but I’m making strides and moving forward and that’s all I can do.I do find that a majority of food and health bloggers have had some issues with food in the past. As much as I would like to say that they are all moving forward and helping others to do the same, some are stuck and may give off some bad habits (not intentionally!). It’s not their fault at all, it’s just the point that they are at in their recovery and perhaps they can’t give to others because they need to help themselves first. I try to give my knowledge to the best that I can without bringing some of my struggles into my posts (although I try to be as honest as possible BUT what I mean is that I wouldn’t push how I EAT on someone else because some of my habits are not healthy). Hospital settings are tough because they have a time limit and they are only trying to get the food in you to get your to a healthier weight. Are they trying to harm you? NO, definitely not. You may think differently, but they aren’t. Do they understand how hard it is for you to accept this forced food..? Probably not, unless they have had an experience like that themselves. It’s hard to relate when you haven’t been there.

      That being said, I’m super proud of you for saying that your way of eating was unhealthy! That is a big step for anything with a problem with food and that is the first step towards getting better and getting your life back. As far as those thoughts are concerned, yes they are tough to combat but always keep that thought in your mind “What I’m doing is…well…essentially killing me” I know that sounds blunt, but it’s true. Look for motivation. Sometimes in the beginning it’s too hard to consider the fact that you are helping yourself because you are too focused on the negatives (I have to gain weight! I have to eat that!?!). So, in the beginning perhaps it would be more helpful to find another source of inspiration until you are able to see it as a good thing for your body and health. Think about the isolation you put yourself through because of your eating. If you eat what they give you are are combating that and maybe will be able to do that with your friends and family and not have anxiety about it. Perhaps you can think about how much you hate not having choice so instead of resisting and keeping that process around longer, deal with it now so that you can take over sooner.

      Does that help? Of course sometimes you just need to vent and when that happens VENT! Don’t hold it in. Let it out, cry. Yell, do whatever you need to in order to get that negative energy out of your system because that is just going to fester and hold you back. You need a clean slate to move forward so ensure you have someone to talk to when you need it.

      You are doing so well and keep going! Your mind is strong, don’t let it walk all over you. Take control and tell it who’s boss. Tell it you are going to have a social life. You are going to have A LIFE so shut up. ๐Ÿ™‚ Good luck and keep doing what you are doing! xo
