OIAJ…..WTH?

Hey Friends!

So I’m just here sippin away on my new Stash Orange Chocolate herbal tea (I almost always have a mug of tea at night before bed) and after making the man his own OIAJ for his breakfast tomorrow as he rushes out the door, it occurred to me that I have never touched on this easy-peasy, lemon-squeasy deliciousness.

So lets touch on that shall we! 😀

So you might first think to yourself….

What the heck is an OIAJ?

Oats In A Jar. Ahhh you gotta love Instagram #hashtag names

So yeah, basically, as the picture shows, it’s your good ol’ oatmeal but it”s put in an ALMOST empty (this is important!) jar of nut butter.

You then may ask me….

Why would I do that?

Why would I cook oatmeal, dirty up a pot, then proceed to put it in a jar to eat?

Doesn’t that make it harder to eat?!?

1. Because who wants to waste the lil bit of nut butter left in the jar? Not this girl. #NutButterAddict

I would hope, no pray, that you wouldn’t just toss this jar out!

#NoNutButterGetsLeftBehind!

2. If cooking your oatmeal stove top, this means you don’t have to dirty another dish (ie. bowl). You can just toss the jar when you are done. Sorry nuker’s, you still have a bowl to dirty up.

3. It’s convenient, ready-to-go when you need it and portable. Got an early class and just want to sleep in a bit? Take your breakfast with you.

4. Get yourself a long handled spoon and you are good to dig in. It’s a game to get in all those crevasses AND if you buy a crazy angled and weirdly shaped jar, well that ones on you. 😛

So last thing before I give up some OIAJ-porn from Instagram and a few recipes, I want to mention that you can have your OIAJ two ways.

1. Hot and Steamy. This would be my preferred way of eating them because the thought of eating oatmeal cold makes me shudder. Just make sure your jar is glass as we don’t wanna be eating leaching plastic and chemicals do we?

2. Classic “Overnight style.” Again, with overnight oats in a jar you can heat it up in the morning BUT the classic overnight oats is eaten straight out of the fridge and generally is not actually cooked. Instead, a hefty serve of yogurt is often added to the oats and the acids from the yogurt help to break down the oats enough giving the OIAJ a nice chewy texture that many love.

So, we will start with Hot and Steamy shall we…

Bring on the #FoodPorn! Thanks to my fellow Instagramer’s and food bloggers for your delicious treats! 😀

To start, here’s a basic recipe. This is the one I made tonight for the man using Bob’s Red Mill steel cut oats. You don’t have to use steel cut, I just wanted to show you some variety.

Banana Bread Eggy [Steelcut]OIAJ.

Serves 1

  • 1/4 cup steel cut oats
  • 3/4 cup water or milk of choice
  • 1 large egg or 1/4 cup liquid egg whites
  • 1/4 cup greek yogurt
  • 1/3-1/2 of a large banana, chopped
  • Cinnamon, spices and/or sweetener of choice to taste
  • Toppings of choice
  • 1 almost empty nut butter jar.

Directions: Add you oats an liqiud to a pot on the stove and bring to a boil. When bubbling, bring the heat down to a simmer and pop the lid on the oats. Let them cook until almost all of the water has been absorbed. Crack and quickly whisk your egg or egg whites into your oats. Throw in your banana and whisk that in as well. Once your oats have reached you desired consistency (add more liquid if you feel they are getting dry while adding your egg and banana), remove from the heat and add in your yogurt, spices and sweetener. Toss into your jar and add your toppings.

Please NOTE that I waited for the oats to cool before putting them in this PLASTIC JAR.

Here’s another one of my own creations from a previous post..

You can even do Waffles In A Jar (WIAJ). Thanks to Heather @ Kiss My Broccoli Blog.

And you don’t even need it to be a nut butter jar. You know what else comes in a jar?

What about something chilled?

Let’s take a peek at the “Classic Overnight” OIAJ combos:

Here’s a basic recipe courtesy of Sarah over at The Sweet Life.

  1. Yum I LOOOOOVE OIAJ!! I’ve never had them warm just because I like the convenience of throwing everything in a jar and magically having breakfast the next day!

  2. i never even herd of warm Overnight oats! And Orange Chocolate herbal tea- sounds yum! I am a tea-o-holic myself. I always add stevia and its like dessert!

  3. Fueling my bod with oatmeal in the AM has been allowing me to feel full for hours. Instead of opting for boring, predictable oats I’ve been adding some unsweetened coconut shavings, a dash of cinnamon, and a sprinkle of nutmeg!

  4. honest i have never had these ever. i plan on it soon could you ever add peanut butter i think that would be epic. this sounds like it would be amazing

  5. You are just so so gorgeous and such great inspiration. This oatmeal looks delicious too 🙂 I’m a big fan of overnight oats, since I rarely have the 5 minutes to cook in the morning.

  6. Oh yum!! This looks seriously delicious!! I love using almond butter jars and adding frozen blueberries!! Sweet and healthy 🙂

  7. i think this recipe sounds really neat and good for me because i never have time in the mornings to eat but i have one major issue.. i hate bannannas. =/ is there anything i could use in it’s place?

    • Yes than they are perfect for you! Breaky is already for ya when you are good to go. Any fruit works really. If you just want some sweetness but nothing really chunky, you can sub unsweetened apple sauce. If you like having chunky fruit in your oats (I love that!) you can really have anything. Berries are great (if you put them in frozen overnight they will melt and infuse your oats) and when certain fruits come into season take full advantage! Peaches and cherries in the summer? LOVE! Ohhh try making a dark chocolate cherry OIAJ. Yum.

  8. Hi Chelsea, I was wondering if you could help me. I just got hired for a summer job (YAY!) which I am really thankful for because it will help me pay off this mounting tuition debt etc. The issue is I JUST began my health journey. I started work on Wednesday & I already know I’m getting in trouble (I’m up 5 lbs already!!!!). The job is an office job. I try bringing healthy snacks, but I usually end up eating them all to pass time. There’s also always someone offering you a chocolate bar or something. What has been difficult is not having flexibility in office hours to workout whenever I want to. I am SO exhausted by the time I come home I just eat and then spend the night on the couch until bed time. I work 9-6 with an hour lunch (I tried walking but it’s in an industrial complex- no where to go really) & it’s about an hour commute in the morning & 30-40 mins on the way home. Any words of advice? HOW DO YOU WAKE UP SO EARLY TO WORKOUT

    • I’m a morning person so getting up has really never been an issue for me. I find that it helps to jump start my mood and energy for the day. If you are finding it tough to get up early, think about how energized you feel once you are done and that might help to push you to get there early. It may also help to set an ‘appointment’ with yourself, whether that be before or after work, where you workout. This could be a class or weights BUT IT HAS TO BE something you love. By setting a time for it, if may push you that little bit more to ensure you get to it and if you love it, you will not dread it either (and hopefully look forward to it!) if it’s early morning or after work)

As for the snacking, it’s tough but snacking is a mind over matter thing. Boredom often leads to snacking so you have to try to keep your mind busy or you will ‘feel like’ you are hungry but really, like you said, you are just passing the time. This can lead to eating more calories than you need, espeically if you are sitting all day at work. Drink some tea or have some fruits or something in your water for a sweeter and more satisfying drink to sip on to curb cravings between meals. Ensure you have those healthy snacks available when you do need them and try you best to avoid those ‘here’s a chocolate bar’ situations as they will not help your energy levels for long. Think about how in 30 minutes you feel like crap because your sugar levels spiked and now they have crashed leaving you tired and probably “hungry” again. It’s not worth it!

      I hope that helps!

  9. I don’t like oatmeal but I love this! My roommate does, too.Last night we’ve had bonding time making this for in the morning. He’s been adding extra banana and I tried adding a little bit of peanut butter on top (even though we used an empty almond butter jar). Hopefully it goes well!

  10. I love overnight oats. I love how chewy the oats get. The texture is reminiscent of soggy cereal once it has sat in milk for some time. I have a silly question but does your family’s or boyfriend’s eating habits ever bother you? How do you continue eating “your” way with them around?

    • No silly questions 🙂 I find that sometimes I may judge subconsciously when my boyfriend makes something for himself that I don’t find to be that amusing or healthy. He is by no means unhealthy but I have to always stop myself because not everyone will eat like me or enjoy the foods I do. I always make my own food and it doesn’t bother anyone else. They tend to more intrigued than anything ha!

  11. I LOVE oats in a jar! The chewier the better. Even like them with steel cut oats! I’ve been looking for a way to make them “naughty”; your banana bread one looks like a great recipe!
    Thanks for the share!

  12. This sounds DELICIOUS! I have been reading about overnight oats in a jar for awhile now but nothing really caught my attention until now. I will be trying this!!

  13. haven’t tried overnight oats with steel cut oats, but I definitely need to. I Love any kind of oats! Your banana recipe with the egg whites looks so delicious!

  14. I’m making this as we speak! Just wondering if you leave the banana in chunks or mash it up?

  15. Just made this.. its waiting in the fridge. I am addicted to your blog. I am considering going vegetarian for a month to test it out and have spent all evening reading through your recipes to see what ways I can add protein, they are awesome! Plus I’m glad I found a fellow tea addict- I’ve been drinking green tea daily for at least 3 years!

    • I love my nightly tea! Unfortunately (for now only I hope) I have had to temporarily give up green tea as part of my “see whats hurting my tummy” quest as it is a major trigger for GERD. I really love green tea and hopefully I can re-introduce it later when my gut has calmed down. I hope your oats were fab and good luck with your new vegetarian journey! 🙂 Glad I can help in any way

  16. 1 Tbsp of unsalted natural peanut butter would be amazing on top!!! Great idea, for this recipe Chelsea!

  17. Holy cow… I’m so whipping this up tonight, with frozen raspberries in lieu of the banana. Sounds like such an indulgent, amazing breakfast, I can’t wait!
Just found you on Pinterest, you’re so inspiring! I’m on my way to losing 40 pounds so I’ll be a frequent visitor. 😉

    • Sounds tasty! I love how good oats are yet they are so good for you and satisfying. Never have a breakfast without’em ;-). Thanks for the Pinterest-love, I hope you can find a few pins you like there!

  18. I just had this as part of my am snack and it was SO good. I have been searching and searching for ways to incorporate oats into my morning meals and this will definitely be staple in my meal plans.

  19. I just prepped mine tonight for when I wake up tomorrow. Even my healthy-food avoiding father thought they tasted okay!

  20. Omigosh! I could eat this stuff all the time. Sooooo good! I tried both cold & hot textures and I like them equally, choosing one over the other depending on my mood. Thanks to you, I can eat banana bread without a stomach ache afterwards!

  21. Thanks for posting these quick and easy recipes that don’t have a laundry list of ingredients (my biggest turn off when I’m trying to find inspiration for my meals).
    xo

  22. What kind of jars do you use for most of your recipes? Are those little 6 oz jars? I made this in a mason jar, and there was lots of space left over! My daughter (2) loved it, said we could eat it for dessert! Thanks for all these awesome recipes! =) SO thankful for all you do with this blog!

    • If there is a lot of space than just use a smaller jar if it becomes tricky to get at it. I use old nut butter jars that come in their standard size mostly but I also make my oats reeeeaallly voluminous by adding eggs/egg whites, zucchini, baked goods, whipped banana, etc. it makes them puff up making it appear like more. I’m so glad you liked it!

  23. OMG love! So trying that recipe! Thanks Chelsea! 🙂 xxoo

  24. I really enjoyed this post! Eating so clean is a challenge for me but I definitely work on it and posts like this are great inspiration. What can I reach for when I’m having a sweet craving? Your day of eating is so clean. Quite the inspiration. If i was to describe mine it would include atleast a cookie or piece of candy. I need to do better but I dont know where to start 😦

    • Moderation is key. I’m quite the extremist and have fine tuned my tastes to crave things like veggies so I no longer have real cravings for sugar. I don’t really have much a sweet tooth anyways. I will say that I truly believe that cravings come from a lack of something in the diet so perhaps check what you are eating during the day for a few days and see if any trends pop up. ARe you not getting enough protein? Are your carbs in the morning complex (digest slowly) or quick (fast digesting and spike your blood sugar…that rebound often creates hunger and cravings for more quick carbs/sweets).

Quick fixes for sweets could be anything from a sweet herbal tea to having some fruit. With the fruit I would recommend having it with a source of healthy fat (nut butter for example) and a protein so that the fructose (natural sugars) will not cause that blood sugar spike as that would just create another craving in about 30 mins lol. A good example could be snacking on a lil bowl of plain (not sweetened) greek yogurt with some added fruit and peanut or almond butter. If that’s not sweet enough, add some stevia. Want some more flavour? Stir in some cocao powder (+stevia) or vanilla extract.

I’m so glad you find my posts inspirational, but please don’t feel like my eats are where it’s at. Like I said, I can be too extreme sometimes and have to try to get rid of any fears of straying from my own foods. 🙂 Keep trekking, you are doing just fine!

  25. Amazing what a healthy attitude about life and fitness can do for one’s spirit. Thanks for sharing the recipe – will have to try this weekend. Recommendations for someone who wants to lose a lot of weight?

    • Thank you! Let me know how the OIAJ go if you try them out! As far as your question, I really want to do a Q&A post as I tend to get that question a lot, but to be brief…
      1. Drink lots of water. Sometimes hunger is actually thirst in disguise. Plus, it helps to flush any toxins out of the body that can be lingering around.
      2. Make veggies your friends! That is not to say that carbs are the enemy, but ensure that half of your plate at meal time is veggie based as they are filling, low calories and chalk full of nutrients.
      3. Make sure you move that body often! Just make sure it’s doing something you enjoy so that you can stick with it 🙂
      4. Be mindful of snacking and what you are snacking on. Are you truly hungry or just bored?
      5. Make sure you are getting enough protein during the day (and especially at breakfast) and stay away from quick digesting starches/sugary foods (white products, heavy wheat stuff, too much fruit, etc) as too little protein and too many quick carbs (that cause your blood glucose to spike up and down all over the place) create room from cravings and false hunger signals.

      I hope that helps!
